More Couches Than Waves: Hosting the World in My Living Room

While many people use Couchsurfing to travel the world, my journey has been the other way around—I’ve hosted more travelers than couches I’ve surfed, and it’s been the most rewarding adventure imaginable. Opening my home in Guatemala City (and sometimes elsewhere!) has brought the world to me in the form of stories, meals, music, and late-night heart-to-hearts. Each guest arrives with a different rhythm, a new perspective, and often a surprising synchronicity with something I didn’t even know I needed to learn. I’ve hosted musicians from the Andes, solo travelers chasing volcanoes, artists painting the soul of Latin America, and nomads with nothing but a backpack and an open heart. In return, I’ve received more than I could count—kindness, laughter, friendship, and even some impromptu dance lessons. Couchsurfing, for me, is less about free accommodation and more about spontaneous connection. I may not have surfed that many couches (yet!), but through hosting, I’ve had the privilege of traveling without moving—seeing the world through countless eyes, stories, and shared meals. To anyone considering hosting more than surfing: do it. Your home will never feel the same again—in the best possible way.
